They didn’t make love. Partly because of having already had two rounds earlier at Paul’s. But mostly because Cory felt horribly uncomfortable with the thought of having sex in this house. He couldn’t have explained why if his life depended on it, but Paul seemed to understand. He gave Cory a sweet, lingering kiss and left with the promise to call him the next day.

After Paul had gone, Cory sat at the kitchen table, absently sipping his tea and thinking. About Paul, and whatever they were becoming to each other. Cory could feel the bond between them deepen every time they touched, or kissed, or made love. Paul’s presence in his life gave him a sense of stability that he hadn’t felt in a long time. Not since the day Mama came home from the doctor’s office and told him those headaches she’d been having were caused by a massive brain tumor.

Part of him desperately wanted to let Paul help him. He was constantly tired lately, mind and body leaden from overwork and sleep deprivation. And he couldn’t deny that Mama would probably benefit from the extra help. But his gut told him that if he accepted what Paul was offering him, it would mean the death of something he’d come to need far more than money. He couldn’t let that happen, no matter what.

“I can do this,” he declared to the empty kitchen. “I don’t need any help. I’m fine.”

Sitting there at the worn and stained table and struggling to keep his eyes open, Cory wondered who he was trying to convince.
